It’s important to acknowledge and understand the experiences of others. Acknowledgment/awareness of other people and of their experiences drives understanding. Understanding drives compassion, and compassion – literally, the act of suffering with – ultimately leads to action. My friend Alexia Salvatierra often references the example of Jesus in Mark 6:34: “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.” Jesus had to first “see” the crowd; once he saw them and understood their plight, he was moved to help them.
In the spirit of promoting awareness and understanding, we’re excited to present DoSomething.org’s “Undocumented for a Day” game. Of course, we know it is impossible to come close to understanding the experience of being undocumented simply by playing a game, but we hope this can be a great first step toward gaining that understanding.
This game puts you in the shoes of an undocumented high school senior approaching graduation. The game works by presenting you with scenarios and different options of responding; you choose how you will respond to each scenario by texting one of the keyword options. For instance, if you’re presented with an option to DRIVE to work or take the BUS, you text back the keyword you want to choose and you’re presented with a new scenario based on your choice. See the picture below for an example:
At the end, you’ll have gained a tiny glimpse into what it’s like to be an undocumented student. The experiences the game presents are based on real life experiences undocumented individuals go through every day. After you complete the game, you will have a chance to take a minute to ask your elected officials to change our broken immigration system in common sense ways.
Share this game with your friends! This game is a wonderful resource especially for those who might not understand what immigration reform is all about, or why it is important. A few technical notes – the game is free, however standard texting fees as determined by your carrier do apply. Also, the game’s messages are coming directly from DoSomething.org and not from G92.
That’s it! To play and/or to learn more, just text DREAM to 38383. You can also find out more at www.DoSomething.org/undocumented. Once you’ve finished the game, please let us know what your experience was like! We’re excited to hear from you. Playtech gokkasten + casino spelletjes | Overzichten – YouTube
