The Shame
I am ashamed. The shame I feel when I hear my fellow Americans speak about immigrants as if they were animals, when they say ‘illegals,’ or when they tell lies about immigrants. For instance, electric fences are for animals, not for people. A candidate from my own city said he wanted to put up an electric fence on the border with Mexico. Even so, the audience applauded and shouted with enthusiasm at his words. These same people, just as I do, have not-too-distant predecessors that were immigrants. Many arrived not speaking English, with nothing, risking their own lives and their families’. So what is the difference today? Now, we accept, at most, 5,000 employer-sponsored immigrants per year from poor (“unskilled”) backgrounds. Our laws exclude people instead of accepting immigrants as we did before. The poem at the Statue of Liberty says: …”Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me…” (Emma Lazarus, 1883) We should change the poem to say: ‘Only if you are rich, if you are in perfect health, if you want to come visit our beaches, or if you have education that will help us, or if you have no difficulties…’ The saddest part is the people who want to stick to our current immigration laws do not even know the law; neither do they know the history of U.S. immigration. Yes, the laws permit a few refugees to enter as destitute people. But, if these same laws were in place when my forefathers came in I would not be here. As a Native American once said in jest: “We should have had stricter immigration laws when the white men came.” Now, if we only had a larger vision, which permitted more immigrants to enter every year, we would have a stronger nation, working and growing. And what do we have today? Fear of people different from ‘us’ – xenophobia – that spawns negative attitudes and rejects good, hard-working people. Maybe for this reason our nation is in debt and stagnant. I am ashamed because there are few who defend immigrants; even though many say they are Christians who follow God. And what does God say? Love your neighbor as yourself, help the widow, the orphan and the immigrant and do not treat them badly. Instead of defending immigrants and accepting that our immigration laws have failed, we have believed the lies of closed-minded people with little vision We cannot find leaders who will propose changes in the laws that can benefit all of us; a leader who encourages us to resolve the problem of the undocumented. Worse, our leaders look for the bad in people instead of seeing the good in them. It seems our politicians, looking for power, want to please the popular thinking. Our leaders cannot or will not see the undocumented as persons who need our support and care as well as creating sensible laws. If my own countrymen understood how all of us can live together in a globalized world, they would not create laws to hurt immigrants. They would, rather, defend and protect them, creating more favorable immigration laws. This would make a great and positive impact on our nation. On the other hand, I am personally ashamed. Although I helped the undocumented for years, I did it without promoting a change in the laws. I was comfortable inside the Latino world and believed all people in the world can live together in harmony. Now I see the attitudes of my fellow Americans, most of whom are ‘white’. They fear the U.S. will lose something if another race becomes the majority. And the present immigration laws favor fearful people who don’t want the Latino population, or any other race, to increase. When I was investigating some immigration myths contained in an email, I discovered a web page full of these myths with a link to a Nazi group! The myths and lies that people tell about immigrants are: “they don’t pay taxes,” “they are costing us a lot of money by taking government benefits,” “they are taking our jobs,” “they are making our jobs cheaper,” “they are committing many crimes,” etc. The people (there are many) who do not investigate these lies are already convinced that these myths are true. How shameful! Now, how can we get rid of this shame we have brought upon our land? By studying our past and understanding why individuals immigrate to our country; by speaking out against the myths and lies and telling the truth about the present; by having a heart for immigrants and caring for them; by looking for positive solutions and supporting politicians who really understand why people come to this country, leaders who know immigrants and will promote and lead an authentic, positive change. Tengo vergüenza. La vergüenza que siento cuando escucho mis paisanos americanos hablar de la gente inmigrante como si fueron animales, cuando digan ‘ilegales,’ o cuando dicen mentiras. Las vallas o cercas eléctricas son para los animales, no para la gente. Un candidato de mi propia ciudad dijo que quiere poner una valla eléctrica en la frontera con México. Aún, la gente aplaudió y gritó con entusiasmo su idea. Esa misma gente tiene antepasados que eran inmigrantes, quizá que no hablaban inglés, que llegaron pobres, sin nada, arriesgando la vida de ellos y de su familia. ¿Y cuál es la diferencia hoy en día? Ahora, solamente aceptamos 5,000 inmigrantes patrocinados por empleadores que son de menos recursos. Nuestras leyes cambiaron a excluir gente en vez de aceptar inmigrantes como antes. El poema en la Estatua de Libertad en New York dice: “… ¡Dadme a vuestros rendidos, a vuestros pobres Vuestras masas hacinadas anhelando respirar en libertad El desamparado desecho de vuestras rebosantes playas Enviadme a estos, los desamparados, sacudidos por las tempestades a mí…” (Emma Lazarus, 1883) Debemos de cambiar el poema a decir: ‘Solamente si eres rico, si estas en salud perfecta, si quieres pasear en nuestras playas o tienes educación que nos ayuda o si no tienes ningún dificultad…” Lo más triste es que la gente que quiere regir las leyes de inmigración ni sabe la ley y tampoco saben la historia de inmigración. Si hay leyes que permiten pocos refugiados para entrar como gente desamparada. Pero si estas mismas leyes hubieron cuando vinieron mis antepasados yo no estuviera aquí. Como dijo un nativo americano: “Nosotros (los nativos de los E.E.U.) debíamos de tener más reglas migratorias cuando vinieron los hombres blancos.” Si tuviéremos una visión más grande, para permitir más inmigrantes entrar cada año, tendremos una nación más fuerte, trabajadora y creciente. ¿Y que tenemos hoy? Temor de los demás por parte de los americanos que resulta en actitudes negativas y termina en el rechazo a gente buena. Tal vez por eso nuestra nación está endeudada y estancada. Tengo vergüenza porque hay pocos que defienden a los inmigrantes aunque hay muchos que dicen que son cristianos, que siguen a Dios. ¿Y qué dice Dios? Amar a tu prójimo como a ti mismo, ayuda la viuda, el huérfano y el inmigrante y no lo trate mal. En vez de defender el inmigrante y aceptar que nuestras leyes de inmigración nos ha fallado, hemos creído las mentiras de la gente cerrada y con poca visión. No hay líderes que realmente tienen actitudes positivas en proponer cambios a las leyes para que todos nos beneficiemos. Que nos anime y nos una para resolver el problema de los indocumentados. Los líderes que tenemos buscan lo malo de la gente en vez de buscar el bien de la gente. La verdad no sé porque, yo pienso que están buscando el poder o tal vez están dejando llevarse por lo que piensan los demás en vez de pensar en gente, como gente que necesita nuestro apoyo y cuidado. Si mi gente americana entendieron como hoy en día la globalización y la importancia de vivir juntos, no crearían leyes para dañar a los inmigrantes, sino que los defenderán y las protegerán creando leyes más favorables. Eso haría un impacto muy grande en nuestra nación. Tengo vergüenza porque tengo años ayudando gente indocumentados sin promover un cambio en las leyes.La historia de inmigración es una historia bonita, de la lucha para vivir una vida mejor. El problema hoy en día es que los americanos no han podido superar la idea que las leyes migratorias no están actualizada. Y, hay gente que piensa que los E.E.U. se va a perder algo si otra raza está en la mayoría. Entonces, la ley migratoria actual favorece la gente miedosa que no quiere que crezca la población de los Latinos ni ninguna otra raza. Cuando estuve investigando unas mentiras de inmigración que leí un correo electrónico hace poco, ¡encontré una página de internet que anunciaba un grupo Nazi! Las mentiras que dicen de los inmigrantes son como “no pagan impuestos,” “están costando mucho dinero en beneficios del gobierno,” “están tomando nuestros trabajos,” “hace que se abarata los sueldos,” “están cometiendo muchos crímenes,” etc… Estos mentiras y más se repiten muchas veces, haciendo creer que son ciertas. La gente que no investiga, ya están convencidos que estas mentiras son hechos. ¡Qué vergüenza! Ahora, ¿cómo podemos quitar la vergüenza? Decir la verdad y estudiar de nuestro pasado, apoyar el inmigrante, buscar lo positivo, entender porque la gente emigra a nuestra país y finalmente, apoyar a los políticos que realmente saben lo que está pasando con la gente para promover una reforma migratoria comprensivo. ¡Apoyemos un cambio positivo!Tim Campbell served for 12 years as a missionary among the poor in Mexico City and has worked with Latino immigrants in Atlanta for the past 15 years.
