blackboardMy brilliant, beautiful and currently extremely pregnant wife, Diana, is a high school Spanish teacher.  Recently, she showed some of her students a film about Spanish-speaking immigrants in the United States.  To get her students thinking, she asked me to design a twenty-question true-false quiz that her students could take as a conversation starter.   What follows is a slightly modified version of that quiz.  I’d expect readers of this blog to fare slightly better than a sample of high school students, but Diana’s students answered, on average, just 39.5% of these questions correctly.  Given that it’s a true-false format, that means they probably would have been better off with random guessing.   The reality is that most American citizens don’t know that much about immigration.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t always stop people from having strong opinions.  At G92, our primary commitment is to challenge followers of Jesus to view immigration from a biblical perspective, but that’s not enough in itself: we also need to have an accurate understanding of the facts.   Now it’s your turn: take the quiz, see how you do—and then, to help decrease the incidence of immigration illiteracy, please share this page with your friends by clicking the Facebook “recommend” button at the top of the page. Matthew Soerens is the co-author of Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion & Truth in the Immigration Debate (InterVarsity Press, 2009) and the US Church Training Specialist at World Relief.  His blogs appear here on Mondays.    Please note that the views expressed do not necessarily represent those of everyone associated with G92, or any institutions with which the blogger may be affiliated.    We’re always looking for new guest bloggers; please check out our Guest Blog Submission Guidelines if you’re interested.

After one of my friends took the quiz on Facebook, he asked where he could find the answer texts. Might be a good idea to post those somewhere.
